A driver has told of the ‘‘amazing day’’ a woman gave birth on his Coventry bus.

National Express bus driver Grzegorz Czerniak – known as Greg – described how he’d picked up passengers at University Hospital and was pulling into Pool Meadow when the drama unfolded.

He said: “From the hospital it was just a completely standard journey but as soon as I started pulling into Pool Meadow bus station everything happened.

“From being a normal day it turned into a crazy day – an amazing day.”

The drama happened at about 2.30pm last Wednesday.

Ironically the couple, believed to be in their 20s, had just caught the No 27 bus back from University Hospital after an appointment.

Greg, a father-of-two, says he has been driving buses for six years but never had anything like this happen on board before.

He said: “I have had some strange things happen, and I have seen babies being born on planes in films, but never before has this happened to me on a bus before.

“I was just driving into the station and one of the passengers saw what was happening and told me. So I safely parked the bus at the stop and people started getting off the bus straight away.

"It all happened so quick. My wife was in labour for 23 hours with our son but this baby was born in five minutes.”
