Councillors’ perks are being targeted under new austerity measures proposed at Nuneaton Town Hall.

The mobile phone allowance for cabinet members and a fund to provide members with computers and IT equipment look set to be scrapped, as the borough council’s controlling Labour group seeks ways of making £1.6m savings.

These two measures would recoup £12,000, while other suggested cutbacks for members include no complimentary Christmas buffet, no free home delivery of council mail and a reduction in expenditure for training and conference attendance.

The Labour budget will be presented at a full meeting of the council on February 23 when other savings will be suggested, such as reducing chauffeur-driven transport for the deputy mayor and reviewing all attendances at outside conferences.

Council leader Dennis Harvey said: “The Labour group knows that massive savings need to be made in Nuneaton & Bedworth’s overall spending and councillors should set an example and make savings before we look at any cuts to services for the public.

“Nuneaton & Bedworth has never been a ‘junketing’ authority and few councils could say they are as careful as we are with other people’s money.

“However, we have looked at every detail of spending which can be cut before we look to save money on services to our residents.
