A man who punched his mother in the face because she wouldn’t pay for his new trainers has been jailed.

Dale Turbitt, of Glebe Close, Canley, had been working for his mother – the landlady of Canley Sports and Social Club – on January 6 when he launched the unprovoked attack.

He claimed his trainers had been damaged by broken glass on the floor of the club and demanded a new pair. When his mother refused he asked for an advance on his wages, but again she said no.

Turbitt, 23, then punched her in the face before she pushed him away.

He then picked up a chair and smashed a patio window before smashing glasses and arming himself with a hammer.

His mother escaped to the ladies toilets where she called the police. She was not injured during the encounter.

Prosecuting barrister Theresa Thorp said: “He immediately admitted the offence and claimed it was down to drink.

“He had drank six pints of lager since 8pm and claimed he was quite drunk.

Turbitt has previously been charged with a variety of offences including robbery, assault and battery and is currently serving a separate prison sentence.

He had previously admitted a charge of affray in Coventry Magistrates Court on January 14.

Sentencing Turbitt to serve another five months on top of his existing sentence, Recorder James Burbidge QC said: “This was despicable behaviour committed whilst drunk in a public place where people were trying to enjoy themselves.
