A Coventry man is one of 7 people jailed today for being part of a crime ring that took £38 million pounds off the taxman.
41-year old Baljinder Singh Sandhu from Whitmore Park helped set up two companies that smuggled in mobile phones and computer parts and then sold them with the VAT added.
After they had been sold on several times they would then export them back to the EU, claiming yet more VAT.
They would then divide up the profits through businesses they set up in Spain and Dubai.
Mr Sandhu has been jailed for 5 years – his cousin Harnaik Singh Sandhu, from Courthouse Green – and another man from Birmingham are yet to be sentenced.
So far, 7 gang member have been put inside for a total of 40 years.
