Police are looking for two men with Liverpool accents who’ve stolen thousands of pounds from a guard outside a Coventry supermarket.

The pair targetted the man as he delivered a cash box to ASDA in Whitley just before 6am on Wednesday.

The 45-year old was threatened by a baton before they grabbed the container and made off across London Road and in the Whitley Estate.

He wasn’t hurt.

Investigating officer, Detective Constable Catherine Dell, said: “The guard lost sight of his attackers as they turned into The Avenue. They may have run into Tonbridge Road or towards Whitley School and over the bridge in the direction of the Esporta health club.

“Whatever direction they took the men ran for at least 300 metres carrying a large black cash box with fluorescent orange stickers stuck to the outside…they would have been very noticeable.

“It may well be that they were putting on the Liverpool accents in an attempt to throw police off the trail, but the guard says the accents were strong and believable.”

Police want to hear from witnesses, especially a man seen using the cash point at ASDA a few yards from where it happened.

You can call DC Dell on 0345 113 5000 ext. 7934 6318 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
