Bogus telephone engineers duped two elderly women into handing over their bank details in an elaborate scam.

On Wednesday tricksters called at two Coventry homes claiming to be from BT.

They told the women their landlines would be cut off unless they paid a digital TV switchover fee.

Both victims – one from Edward Bailey Close, Ernesford Grange and the other who lives in Sunnybank Avenue, Toll Bar End – were duped out of their bank cards after being asked to enter them into a mobile chip and pin machine.

One later discovered that £50 had been withdrawn from her account.

A warning has now gone out to people all over the city.

Detective Constable Joel Mildinhall explained: “The bogus engineer asks for a nominal sum of money but says it must be a card payment, not cash. Having watched the ladies enter their PIN numbers the offender then claims there’s a problem and needs to go to his van – but of course they then vanish with the bank card.
