Tesco is appealing against Coventry City Council’s decision to refuse planning permission for a new store in Coundon.

Councillors have rejected two bids by the supermarket giant to build a new outlet in Holyhead Road, following objections from residents and nearby shopkeepers.

In their letter to the Planning Inspectorate, agents acting on behalf of Tesco accuse councillors of “acting unreasonably” in refusing planning permission because they ignored the advice of council officers, who wanted to grant permission for the second application.

Coun Gary Ridley Con, Sherbourne, said: “It is no surprise they have appealed but I find their attitude unbelievable.

“Locally elected councillors took account of all the evidence presented and made a decision that was in the best interests of Coventry and its citizens and now Tesco believes that this is unreasonable behaviour.

“Not only are Tesco being incredibly arrogant but they are behaving in a vindictive manner too”.
