"All Coventry speed cameras could be switched off"

West Midlands Police are claiming all 304 speed cameras in the region are set to be switched off at the start of April to save cash.

Coventry Council, and six others across the region are part of a West Midlands casualty reduction group that use government funding to pay for them.

The cash has now been withdrawn, so it would be up to local authorities themselves to decide if they’ll take money from elsewhere to keep them running.

Inspector Mick Hartill manages the cameras for West Midlands Police and says if they go, more people will die on the roads:

“From the local transport plan, it clearly says cameras have had an affect and over 400 people have been saved from injury as a result of camera’s being there.”

Just last month, a survey revealed only 17 per cent of cameras in the West Midlands were operational at any one time.

A meeting of the West Midlands transport sub-committee tomorrow will talk through the issue, but Coventry Council say no decision about the future of the city’s cameras has been made yet.
