Love it or hate it, the Coventry Ring Road is part of the city's furniture and is an easy connection between one part of Coventry to another.

The first section was completed in the early 1960s, but it wasn't until 1974 that people could drive on the full-stretch of road we know today.

From the evening of Sunday, 30 January, parts of the Ring Road will be closed for repairs during the evening.

Between 1900-0500 hrs, sections will be closed for around two weeks.

Essential repairs

Speaking about the essential repairs, Colin Knight, Head of Highways at Coventry City Council, told BBC Coventry & Warwickshire: "This is really good news for the city motorist... It started off with our cleansing team saying that they were going to do a deep clean, but they asked us in highways if there was any work we wanted to do, and it grew. Before we knew it, we've got five different operations going on on the Ring Road over the next couple of weeks."

The planned work includes:

• Defining and painting the white lines

• Making the road cleaner

• Replacing bulbs in the street lights

• Resurfacing and working on the potholes

• Replacing some of the vehicle safety fencing

Colin Knight added: "We'll also do some on and off slips (roads), particularly between junctions five and six, around St Patricks Ringway, they're particularly bad. So they'll get a full resurfacing job.

"We've chosen the quietest time of day by concentrating all the activity... We can minimize the disruption for the motorist. We're also saving the council money. We save about £30,000 or £40,000 doing it this way. It's a real win win situation."

The closure details are as follows:

Sunday, 30 January - Junction one (Foleshill Road) to junction four (London Road) (1700 - 0600 hrs)

Monday, 31 January - Junction three (Sky Blue Way) to junction five (Mile Lane/Cheylesmore) (1900 - 0600 hrs)

Tuesday, 1 February - Junction five (Mile Lane) to junction seven (The Butts) (1900 - 0600 hrs)

Wednesday, 2 February - Junction seven (The Butts) to junction nine (Radford Road) and Ringway St Patricks, carriageway and slip road junction six and five. (1900 - 0600 hrs)

Thursday, 3 February - Junction nine (Radford Road) to junction one (Foleshill Road) (1900 - 0600 hrs)
