An elderly motorist walked away without a scratch after crashing his car through a lock-up garage in Tile Hill.

The man, thought to be in his 80s, was parking his Vauxhall Astra when his foot slipped onto the accelerator.

The car lurched forward and smashed through the three-inch thick concrete wall at the back of the prefabricated garage in Rosemary Close.

The man was shaken up but unhurt, although the garage was declared unsafe and sealed off by structural engineers from Coventry City Council.

Watch commander Ian Taggart, of Canley fire station, said: “The elderly gentleman was trying to put his car in his garage and put his foot on the throttle instead of the brake.

“The garage doors were already open but he’s gone through the back wall, which is three-inch thick concrete.

“The car’s ended up half in the garage, and half out on some grass.

“He was a little bit shaken up but remarkably chipper considering what had just happened.”
