Nuneaton Town FC said it was investigating the incident which happened after its home match against AFC Telford United on Monday.

Telford fans said some of them were hurt when they were hit with stones and bottles as they left the ground at Liberty Way after the goalless draw.

Warwickshire Police said the arrests were for disorder offences.

Rob Palin, who organises away travel for Telford fans, said: "Some of the people who got to the coach first were forced to effectively lie down on the floor while the coaches was stoned, bricked - to avoid the onslaught that was coming from the so-called Nuneaton fans.

"They were obviously very, very shook-up and yes, some people are quite badly upset."

'Small minority'

One Telford fan, 19-year-old Ross Crowson, said he was hit after bottles, paint cans, tyres and glass were thrown by rival fans.

"I just laid on the floor and people were trying to pick me back up. I've got a lump on my head," he said.

"I'm a bit shaken up and I just can't believe it."

A police spokeswoman said six people were being interviewed after an "incident of disorder".

She said Nuneaton CID particularly wanted to hear from anyone who photographed or filmed the disruption.

Nuneaton Town FC said it was "saddened" by the events and was investigating.

It said in a statement that it called police to the ground at 1631 GMT "following the actions of a small minority of males inside the ground".

It said anyone identified as being involved in the disorder would be banned from the ground.

"The officer dealing with the incident has told the club that the offenders most certainly never came to the club to watch football," a spokesman added.
