MP Zarah Sultana removed from House of Commons



MP Zarah Sultana was removed from the House of Commons after calling Prime Minster Sir Keir Starmer a "bare-faced liar".

Sir Keir faced accusations on Monday that he knew Lord Mandelson initially failed security vetting for the role of US Ambassador.

Sir Lindsay Hoyle asked Sultana to withdraw her comment, using unparliamentary language, and to leave.

However the Your Party MP for Coventry South, said she had a "duty to the house", leading Hoyle to "name" Sultana and suspend her.

The motion means Sultana is barred from the chamber and precincts, and will lose pay for five days.

Lord Mandelson was sacked from his role as US Ambassador over his ties to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Sir Olly Robbins, the former top civil servant at the Foreign Office, was effectively sacked last week after it was found that his department had granted the peer security clearance for the role last year, despite concerns raised by vetting officials.

Sir Keir denied misleading parliament when he told the Commons that "full due process" had been followed during Lord Mandelson's appointment.

The prime minister said that while the information gathered during the vetting process should not be divulged - there was no reason why the overall vetting recommendation could not have been shared with him.

Sir Olly gave evidence on Tuesday to MPs on the foreign affairs committee, where he said No 10 had a "dismissive" approach to the vetting process.

Posting about the incident on X, Sultana doubled down on her comments and called for the prime minister to resign.
