The dead body of a man has been found in a wheelie bin in a park in Coventry, said police.

An urgent appeal has been issued by the force, who believe the man was hit by a car before being moved to Cash's Park off Daimler Road at 17:00 GMT on Friday.

A member of the public found the man, who is believed to have been aged between 40 and 50 years old.

He was found in a Coventry City Council bin with a green lid, said West Midlands Police, who are working with the council to find out where the bin has been moved from.

Officers are trying to establish who the man is, and where and how he died.

Det Ch Insp Phil Poole, from the Major Crime Unit, said: "We are keeping an open mind, but we believe that this man has been hit by a vehicle, and then has been moved to the park.

"I urgently want to hear from anyone who believes they may have hit someone in their car yesterday, or who has noticed a change in behaviour from someone they know who drives, or who has noticed damage to a vehicle.

"It's vital that we trace that person as quickly as possible so that we can get their account of what happened.

"If anyone in the area has found that their wheelie bin with a green lid has been stolen, I also want to hear from them."

An area in the north west corner of the park remains cordoned off, guarded by police officers.

A blue forensics tent has been erected in a wooded area of the park, which is quiet apart from a few joggers and dog walkers.

Forensics officers have also been seen at the scene.

Anyone with information, or who has dashcam or CCTV footage from the area, has been asked to get in touch.

Details of victim released after body found in Coventry bin

Police have released new details about a man found dead in Coventry. His body was discovered in a wheelie bin off Daimler Road at around 5pm on Friday (March 13).

Officers are working to identify the man, who was believed to be between 40 and 50 years old. He was found in a Coventry City Council wheelie bin with a green lid.

Detectives have today (March 15) released images of the wheelie bin where the man was found. It is believed he may have been struck by a vehicle before being moved to Cash's Park.

Police said the man had a tattoo on his back of a cross with a snake wrapped around it and the words 'Little Stardust.' He also had a tattoo on his right arm reading 'Nan' with a clover and the colours of the Irish flag.

Urgent enquiries are under way to establish who the man is and how he died. Police have established a Major Incident Public Portal (MIPP) for anyone with details about what may have happened.

Det Ch Insp Phil Poole said: “We have a large team of detectives, forensic specialists and other staff working around the clock to establish what has happened to this man, who he is, and who is responsible.

“We have had several pieces of information come through to us as a direct result of our appeal, and we are following up those lines of enquiry. I really want to hear from anyone who recognises the descriptions of the tattoos on the man, as they are quite distinctive.

“I also really want to hear from anyone who has noticed unexplained damage on a vehicle, perhaps of a partner or relative, or anyone who has noticed a sudden change in behaviour from someone they know.

“If you know or are responsible for what happened to this man, I would urge you to come forward now so that we can get the answers that he deserves.”

Three people have been arrested after a man was found dead in a wheelie bin in a Coventry park.

A man and a woman, both in their 40s, and a man in his 20s were each held on suspicion of murder and assisting an offender.

They were detained overnight in Blackpool, police said.

Efforts to formally identify the dead man and establish how he died were continuing, the West Midlands force added.

Officers were called by a member of the public at 17:00 GMT on Friday to Cash's Park off Daimler Road.

Police estimate the age of the deceased man found there to be between 40 and 50.

They believe he was hit by a car before being moved to the site.

A man found dead in a wheelie bin in a Coventry park has been named by police as 37-year-old Thomas Niven, whose family said their hearts were "in pieces" over the loss of their "pillar of strength".

His body was discovered after officers were called by a member of the public on Friday evening to Cash's Park off Daimler Road in the city.

A man and a woman in their 40s, and a man in his 20s, were later arrested in Blackpool on suspicion of murder and assisting an offender.

West Midlands Police said investigations were continuing and Niven's family were being supported by officers and updated on the inquiry's progress.

The identity of the body was a mystery to police over the weekend, with the force seeking the public's help by sharing detail about distinctive tattoos.

Police believe Niven was hit by a car before being moved to the park.

In a tribute released by police, his family said: " We are all in shock and are devastated, our hearts are in pieces at the loss of Tom in such a cruel way. He was a pillar of strength towards us all.

"He was loving and caring, he loved all of his family, he was a big softy when it came to animals and his nephews and nieces."

The family added: "He was full of laughter and had such a vibe for life, he had a charm that would lift a dull spirit, he loved his music and playing pool. He loved small harmless pranks but could never keep a straight face and would break out into a laughter.

"We are so proud to have had Tom in our lives, his life has tragically been cut short in the most cruel way. Tom will forever be missed."

Det Ch Insp Phil Poole said: "We are continuing to build a picture of what happened and the three people arrested at the weekend remain in police cells as those inquiries continue."
