A 33-year-old man has been detained under the Mental Health Act after 11 people were injured in a knife attack.

It comes after two men and a woman were stabbed and at least eight other people were injured on Coventry Road and Gilbert Close in Bedworth on Saturday morning.

One of the men who was stabbed, aged in his 20s, is in a stable condition in hospital.

Officers from Warwickshire Police continue to patrol the town centre.

Warwickshire Police were called at about 08:00 BST to reports of people being assaulted.

One woman told the BBC she was woken up by loud bangs on her front door and, when she answered, a man punched her twice and stabbed her in the throat with a pair of scissors.

The other two stab victims were discharged from hospital after treatment and the other victims all suffered minor injuries.

Bedworth Safer Neighbourhood Team said it would be in the town centre to reassure the local community.

Man stabbed two in town centre random attacks

A man who went on a rampage, carrying out 10 random attacks in a town centre in 30 minutes and stabbing two members of the public with scissors, has been jailed.

The 36-year-old stabbed the two people before he carried on walking into the centre of Bedworth where he attacked more passers-by, swinging punches and knocking many to the ground on 23 April 2022, police said.

Callum Maclean, of no fixed address, was found guilty of offences including wounding, assault and actual bodily harm (ABH), at Warwick Crown Court.

After Friday's hearing, PC Claire Jones, from Warwickshire Police, said: "It is just fortunate no one was more seriously injured."

Police said that Maclean was disarmed by the second member of public who he stabbed during his "violent rampage".

However, he continued his attacks as he walked into the town centre that Saturday, at about 08:00 GMT.

Officers found him on Leicester Road, tasered and arrested him.

Maclean was sectioned under the Mental Health Act and spent the next 30 days receiving treatment.

He was convicted of two counts of wounding with intent, criminal damage, possessing a blade in a public place, six counts of assault by beating, ABH and common assault.

Maclean was jailed for eight years, extended by five years on licence, and ordered to pay a victim surcharge.

PC Jones said: "Maclean randomly assaulted ten innocent people as they were going about their daily business."

She thanked the numerous members of the public who reported the incident, "enabling us to quickly locate and arrest Maclean".
