Wetherspoon's has revealed the date popular pub The Spon Gate will close. CoventryLive broke the news the boozer would shut its doors on Friday (14 March).

A spokesman for the budget pub specialist has now told us the venue's "Final day as a Wetherspoon" will be Sunday, 25 May. This will leave the city centre with two Wetherspoon's - The Flying Standard and the The Earl of Mercia. There will also be The City Arms in Earlsdon.

Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon previously said: "It is closing. It is a commercial decision taken by Wetherspoon. We thank all our staff and customers over the years."

Though a closing date has now been confirmed it is unclear if staff will lose jobs or be deployed to other Wetherspoon pubs. The Spon Gate forms part of the Skydome complex. The pub is decorated with photographs and drawings showing Coventry's medieval history. It's been a Wetherspoon's since 2010, having previously been Chicago Rock Cafe.

Like many Wetherspoon's, the name is taken from local history. The original Spon Gate formed one of the entrances to walled Coventry. It was found on Spon Street, near St John's Church. The walls of the city were demolished under the order of Charles II in 1662 leaving just some of the city's gates behind. The Spon Gate survived until 1771 when it too was demolished.
