A centre to help victims of rape and sexual assault is to be built in the Coventry and Warwickshire area.

Police said a suitable location was being sought for a Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) where people can receive care and counselling.

The nearest centre is in Castle Vale, near Birmingham, which means victims from the two areas currently need to travel at least 10 miles (16km).

Warwickshire Police said it aimed to improve its services for victims.

Det Insp Mumford, of Warwickshire Police, said police had worked with local councils and a number of agencies including the Crown Prosecution Service and charities on the project.

"It's the early stages and we are far from the finished product but we have made that firm commitment as part of our drive to improve the services that survivors of these horrendous crimes receive," he said.
