The planning application was submitted last year

A decision date on whether Morrisons can build its first store and petrol station in Nuneaton has yet to be set.

As we reported in our newsletter, the supermarket giant wants to build on the former goods yard and existing waste transfer station off Midland Road. The planning application was submitted to Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council at the end of last year.

But the proposal has yet to feature on any agenda for the council's planning applications committee. The next planning meeting, which was due to take place on March 22, has also been cancelled.

CoventryLive contacted the borough council about the application and when it is due to be debated.

A Town Hall spokesman said: "There is no date yet as the application is still under consideration."

Consultation into the plans, which included asking residents their views, ended on January 7.

The application contains images of what the store would look like as well as the petrol station and a garden centre.

It'll probably replace the one in Holyhead Road as that won't be needed any more, especially with an Aldi and a Lidl opening nearby?

Delay to decision on Morrisons plan for first supermarket in Nuneaton

Image

Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council has lifted the lid on why the Morrisons plan for its first store in the borough has been delayed. As we reported in our newsletter, the supermarket giant wants to build on the former goods yard and existing waste transfer station off Midland Road.

The planning application was officially submitted to Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council at the end of last year but it has yet to be discussed at a planning meeting. The council's planning team set a target decision date for the application was set as March 7 - which was now more than two months ago.

CovenryLive asked the council what was behind the delay in the application being discussed. In a statement, Phil Richardson, director of planning and regulation at the Town Hall, said the application was 'complex' and extra information has been needed..

This includes noise, and the impact of the development on ecology in the area. "This is a complex application for a large site in a residential area.

"Our officers are working with the applicant to bring forward the application to committee as soon as possible," the statement read. "Issues under discussion include highways, environmental health matters, particularly with regard to noise, and the impact of the development on ecology."

As these discussions are ongoing, no definitive date has been given as to when the application will be debated.

'Ghost turning' for new Nuneaton Morrisons store set for green light

Image

A 'ghost turning' into the new Nuneaton Morrisons store is set to be given the green light. The supermarket giant was given the go-ahead for the new store, petrol station and car park on the former goods yard and waste transfer site off Midland Road.

One condition of this was the development cannot be opened until road works to allow traffic to access the Midland Road-based supermaket were in place. This is includes a 'ghost' turning in the form of a right turn lane junction and signalised pedestrian crossing.

The right hand turn is set to reduce delays on the already busy Midland Road. There will also be a relocated eastbound bus stop, and tactile paving across Stanley Road.

As Warwickshire County Council is responsible for all highways works, it has to approve the road plans for access to the store which, according to a report, will cost approximately £357,300 and is being paid for by the developer.

Councillor Peter Bultin, deputy leader and cabinet member for finance and property, is set to give approval to the addition of fully developer-funded highway improvement scheme to the capital programme this year. He is set to make the decision at a meeting on Wednesday (November 15).

Morrisons issues construction update for new Nuneaton store

Morrisons has issued an update on the construction of its first store in Nuneaton. CoventryLive approached the company about the superstore and petrol station planned off Midland Road.

Just before Christmas, a flurry of planning applications were lodged by the national firm, including details for the petrol station as well as one at Warwickshire County Council approving the works for the new 'ghost turning' access to the store.

A Morrisons spokesperson said that they are awaiting approval to access the site and this is likely to be around Easter. Then a full construction timetable is set to be revealed.

The spokesperson explained: "We secured planning permission for the development of the new store on the site of the Waste Transfer Station and former Goods Yard at Midland Road in July 2023 and are currently reviewing the plans for it.

"We are also in the process of obtaining the appropriate access to the site from the Local Highway Authority and anticipate that this will take a few months. It is likely to be Easter 2024 when this is in place and at that point we will have a better understanding of the timeline for construction."

Morrisons issues new update on future of Nuneaton store

Image

Morrisons has issued an update on future of its planned new Nuneaton store. It is a topic that has been on the lips of locals who want to know what is happening with the supermarket.

The national name was given planning permission for the superstore and petrol station off Midland Road in the summer of 2023. Then it lodged a number of planning applications in regards to elements of the operation.

But no construction work started. Then, last year, the firm admitted it was 'reviewing' the planned opening date and details.

Having issued no update since, CoventryLive contacted Morrisons for the latest on the store. This included asking if the store was going to go-ahead.

A spokesperson said it was still considering options. No final decision has been made, however, it is 'unlikely that the new store will open in Nuneaton this year.'

As with every planning application agreement, the works have to take place within three years of the approval date. In the case of the Morrisons application, this would be the summer of next year.

Nuneaton does not have a Morrisons store. The nearest are in neighbouring Coventry and a concession with a store in Atherstone.
