Lillie Jones said her 71-year-old grandma has been 'in pieces' since the incident happened in November
A Coventry OAP has 'spent most days crying' after her city home was vandalised. Granddaughter Lillie Jones said the 71-year-old could have been killed when her property was 'targeted' in November.
Vandals are said to have smashed the front window of the property on Loudon Avenue. It happened at around 3.55am on Thursday, November 21.
Ms Jones said she returned home from a night shift to find the badly damaged window and her 71-year-old grandma sitting in bed visibly 'shocked.' She then quickly dialled 999.
Speaking to CoventryLive, Lillie said: “I ran straight inside to see if she was OK. Luckily she was unharmed but was sat on her bed in a state of shock.”
Lillie believes the window had been smashed with two plant pots, saying: “It was absolutely terrible because the plant pots and glass were shattered all over the living room.”
She added: “Had my grandma been in that room at the time of the incident, which she usually is, as she sleeps on the sofa due to being so frail, there is no doubt in my mind that she would have been severely hurt or possibly killed.”
Lillie believes the city-based property was targeted. She said: “My grandma remembered hearing a wheelie bin being moved outside at around 11pm, but when she looked, she could not see anything, so not thinking much of it, she went back to sleep.
“When we went to have a look at the garden after the attack, we noticed that a wheelie bin had been moved from directly opposite our house into our front garden. It looked as if this had been placed rather than dragged up the path, which led us to believe that the house was being targeted and the wheelie bin was being used as a marker.”
Lillie said her 71-year-old grandma has been 'in pieces' since the incident happened. She said: “She has spent most days crying, does not want to spend time in the living room just in case, is scared to leave the house, and has even considered moving.
“It has taken such a toll on not only her mental and physical health but on all of our family. Not knowing if this will happen again, not knowing whether she will be safe in her own home, all of it has left me and my grandma in pieces.”
Lille added: “It crushes me and my family that she feels this way. A way that no woman, elderly especially, should ever feel in their own home, a home that she has worked so hard for.”
Detectives have launched an investigation into the incident and urged those with information about what happened to get in touch with them by calling 101. Information can also be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers.
A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: “We are investigating a report of criminal damage on Loudon Avenue in Coventry. Anyone with more information can contact us via 101 or Live Chat, quoting crime number 20/977099/24.”
