A woman has died after being attacked by a dog in Coventry. It happened in Wood End earlier today (Monday, July 22).

Neighbours dialled 999 to report that a woman had been attacked by her pet dog at an address on Wexford Road. Paramedics and Midlands Air Ambulances reached the scene at around 12.15pm.

Medics administered treatment to a woman in her 30s but despite their best efforts she died a short time later, West Midlands Police said. Her family have been informed.

Officers have seized the dog, which is not believed to be a banned breed, and the death of the woman has been reported to the coroner, West Midlands Police said. Nobody else was believed to have been injured.

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “Crews arrived with police officers to find a woman inside a property in a critical condition. With help from police, the woman was rapidly removed from the property due to safety concerns.

“Staff performed advanced life support but tragically, despite their best efforts, nothing could be done to save the woman and she was confirmed dead on scene a short time later. No one else was injured in the incident.”

Chief Inspector David Amos, from Coventry Police, said: “We understand that this is a distressing and tragic incident and we would like to thank the local community for their support and to our emergency services colleagues who dealt with this incident.

“Our thoughts remain firmly with the family and loved ones of the woman who has sadly died and will be informing the coroner of her death. Although the breed of the dog is yet to be confirmed, at this stage we do not believe it to be a banned breed. However, a full assessment will be required before we can confirm this.”

A tragic event, and I have no idea how/why it happened. But people need to remember that dogs are animals and not surrogate children.

I've had dogs most of my life, I've been bitten once. That was my fault!
