An extra 3,000 tonnes of grit have been bought by Coventry City Council in preparation for winter.

The council has 5,000 tonnes of salt on standby to be used during the next cold spell this winter, a spokesman said.

In 2009 the authority bought just 2,000. Neighbouring Warwickshire County County said in August it had 14,000 tonnes ordered for the winter.

Coventry's supplies will be used to grit the 250 miles of roads across the city in the coming months.

The council said its gritting team will test a new system in its trucks that when it displays the gritting routes, it adjusts the amount of salt spread, depending on the state of the road.
