Man jailed after unprovoked machete attack in Coventry

Image

The thug behind a terrifying machete attack in Coventry city centre has been jailed. The machete-wielding man was Daniel John-Forbes, 18, of Grace Road, Birmingham, fled the scene after the terrifying incident in Broadgate on September 27 this year.

John-Forbes approached a group of people before pulling out a machete out of his trousers and attacking one of them. The victim suffered potentially life-threatening injuries to the arm, leg and hand.

Officers managed to trace John-Forbes' movements before tracking him down. He was arrested and charged with wounding and possession of a bladed weapon.

Now, at Warwick Crown Court, he has pleaded guilty to the charges and was given a six and a half years sentence. Detective Inspector Katherine Sibley, from the Eastern Complex Investigations team, said: "This was a violent and unprovoked attack, and this sentencing is the result of some excellent work by PC Jasmine Lovell and the rest of the team.

"They worked tirelessly and to a high level to identify Forbes and put together the case. The case was so strong the defendant pleaded guilty to all charges at the first hearing."

A statement from West Midlands Police reads: "A man has been jailed after a machete attack in Coventry. Daniel John-Forbes was jailed for six and a half years after the attack, which took place on 27 September this year.

"At Warwick Crown Court on 21 December, John-Forbes was jailed for an initial four and half years with an extended period of two years after being found to be a dangerous offender. 18-year-old John-Forbes, of Grace Road, Birmingham, approached a group of people at Broadgate in Coventry City Centre before pulling a machete out of his trousers and attacking one of them.

"He hit a man in the arm, leg and hand, inflicting potentially life-changing injuries before running away from the scene, later being tracked down by officers investigating. Having tracked his movements, officers from the Coventry NPU and CID investigated and helped piece together John-Forbes’ movements.

"Complex Investigations team members in Coventry then identified John-Forbes and charged him with Section 18 wounding and possession of a bladed weapon."

Something not quite right about that report?

Either it was a 'random' attack and he belongs in a lunatic asylum or (far more likely) it was a targetted attack and we shoukld be told the reason.
