Locals were forced to leave a Coventry park while bomb squad carried out a controlled explosion. Nearby roads were cordoned off for several hours on Tuesday (June 15).

Police have said that they were initially called at around 2.45pm to reports of a suspected WWII shell in the canal off Leicester Causeway. Student Abdulwahid Hassan, 22, who saw the explosion, said the EOD cleared Stoke Heath Park and set up the bomb for the detonation, which took around an hour to carry out.

He explained that the team dug a hole before placing the bomb inside. It was then covered in sandbags to try to 'reduce the damage as much as possible.'

Speaking about how he felt watching the explosion, Abdulwahid told CoventryLive : “First time being around something like this so it was a really cool experience. And the bomb was quite loud even after being buried fairly deep in the ground.”

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: “We were called after a suspected WW2 shell was found in the canal off Leicester Causeway, Coventry, just after 2.45pm yesterday (14 June). We contacted the EOD who removed the device and carried out a controlled explosion.”

Morris park!
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.
