Coventry City Council has hit out at pranksters after vandals struck in the Upper Precinct

Pranksters adding washing-up liquid to the water in public fountains is causing local councils a financial headache. Just two weeks ago, Coventry City Council had to fork out thousands of pounds after vandals poured detergent into the fountains in Upper Precinct.

In a stark warning, the local authority hit out at vandals saying that although the prank may look 'funny', it prevents children from being able to play in the fountains while also making the surface slippery for older people.

Coventry City Council revealed that the cost of cleaning the foamy mountain of bubbles amounts to an eye-watering sum of £3,000. Costs are said to be incurred from flushing out the tanks, refilling them with fresh water and getting the water running again.

A spokesman for Coventry City Council said: “A couple of weeks ago someone put washing up liquid into the fountains in the Upper Precinct. It might look funny, but this stops children from being able to play and makes the surface slippery for older people and for anyone unsteady on their feet.

“It costs about £3,000 to clear it up, flush out the tanks and get fresh, clear water running again. We want everyone to be able to enjoy the new fountains – but we need everyone to help us look after them – and that means keeping them foam-free.”

In a similar incident, Birmingham City Council chiefs slammed the 'mindless vandalism' of pranksters after the newly opened landmark 'Floozie in the Jacuzzi' fountain was found to be overflowing with thick white bubbles. It was said to have caused thousands of pounds worth of damage.

Councillors said the 'act of vandalism' carried out on the day the fountain opened caused 'significant disruption' to the plant room which operates it.

Rather predictable, wasn't it?
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.
