Conservative councillors are backing the residents call to have the road redone

Residents living on St Helens Way in Allesley have called on the council to fix potholes on their road and footpath.

They say that the surface has been damaged over several years by lorries using the street to load and unload.

The damage has then been compounded by periods of extreme hot and cold weather which has led to the surface to fracture even more.

Conservative Coventry City councillor, Jaswant Birdi, is backing the residents.

He will present a petition bearing 67 signatures to a meeting of all councillors on Tuesday 7th September at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

He said: "This street should have been resurfaced years ago so it’s not surprising that residents feel as though they’ve been ignored for far too long.

"Earlier this year Coventry Conservatives put forward fully-costed plans to spend an extra £200,000 a year on highways which Labour rejected.

"I would urge them to consider this request more carefully - or will it take someone to be seriously injured before they take action?"

Local resident Geraldine Bull has been helping Cllr Birdi to collect signatures for the petition.

She said: "The road is full of deep potholes, getting worse with each passing year.

"One poor elderly gentleman tripped, fell and sustained a head injury this year.

"Fortunately, the poor man survived this ordeal, but he required an ambulance and treatment and now walks looking down towards the pavement.

"Another lady who has had previous back injuries and surgeries tripped and fell in the pothole outside her drive.

"We feel It is not acceptable to dismiss the concerns of the residents and consider that this request for action is both justified and necessary."

Other areas of the city are just as bad, if not worse. Why the pandering to Allesley?
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.

Some potholes on crater-riddled Coventry road filled in - while others left untouched

Residents and business owners on a Coventry road which is riddled with potholes say they have been left baffled over why the council has only done half a job of filling them in.

A 200-metre stretch of Birmingham Road is covered in potholes of various different sizes. Residents say some resurfacing work was carried out further down the road a few years ago - and they cannot understand why the area between Neale Avenue and Rye Hill has been left untouched.

And they say it urgently needs to be brought up to the same standard as it is 'ruining' their cars. The busy stretch is also used as a cut through by HGVs which has worsened the road surface.

One resident, whose house faces some of the worst potholes on Birmingham Road, said: "It's always the same, lots of areas are doing the roads, hopefully this will be included.

While Charlotte Day, who owns the village cafe, said: "Obviously the weather causes it. I do see occasional HGVs going past. It is obviously ruining cars as well. [When] the big lorries come down, it damages your car after."

Andrea Edwards, who is local resident of 32 years, added: "The whole road was as bad. I live near Allesley Croft and go over [the potholes] every time. A few years back they fixed all of it until Neale Avenue. I'd like to get it repaired and fixed to the same standard as the other part."

A few doors down at Allesley Post Office, worker Sonia told CoventryLive: "It's very bad, I have a big car and it effects your tyres. I can see my tyres, it looks horrible!" She added: "They did the new road last year, and after that they left [the other] part, they didn't say why, but it is not good enough for us people."

As we reported last month, more than 500 people have signed a petition calling for improvements to Birmingham Road. They’ve received the support of local Bablake Ward Councillor, Jaswant Birdi, who presented it to full council last month.

Cllr Birdi said previously: “Many residents have been in touch with me about this issue, so I was very keen to give this petition my full support. It calls on the Council to improve the 200-metre stretch of Birmingham Road from Neale Avenue to Rye Hill bringing it up to the same standard as the part which has already been resurfaced.”
