An Amazon employee who was caught red-handed after stealing more than £18,000 worth of mobile phones and computer memory boards has escaped being jailed.

Eskinder Weldeab, who worked at the Amazon distribution centre in Allesley, was searched by security staff at the end of his shift after they suspected the theft.

They found a number of phones on him and computer memory boards in his car, which he was planning on selling to repay a mechanic who fixed his car.

He appeared at Warwick Crown Court where he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to six months in jail suspended for two years.

Prosecutor Joshua Purser said the theft had taken place ‘in breach of some degree of trust’ last month while Weldeab was working at the Amazon distribution centre.

Altogether he had stolen 13 phones and 10 memory boards with a total value of around £18,500, said Mr Purser, who added that in an impact statement, Amazon said such a theft "impacts on our brand image".

Weldeab, 28, of Firtree Road, Erdington, Birmingham, was also ordered to do 100 hours of unpaid work.

Sentencing Weldeab, Judge Andrew Lockhart QC told him: “Things such as taking from Amazon do have an impact. The actions could have lost the business about £18,500.

“But this type of behaviour impacts on other businesses who rely on it to sell their goods, and it impacts on their brand image.

“You were a trusted employee. Businesses such as Amazon have to trust members of the community to come and work there in order that the business can continue.

“It has taken you time to come to terms that you were thoroughly dishonest.

“This is a serious matter which justifies a custodial sentence. The issue is whether I must make it one you should serve immediately. I am just persuaded I can suspend it.”

WTF do you need to do to get prison these days? Yet again, we have an out of touch judge not doing his job properly. :fuming: :fuming: :fuming:
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.
