Retirement apartments have been approved on the site of offices in Coventry.

Outline plans to demolish existing buildings at 509-511 Walsgrave Road for the development of 32 retirement apartments was granted delegated approval this week.

Spanning across three blocks, the scheme will consist of 32 two-bedroom apartments aimed at people over the age of 55, alongside a car park with 35 spaces.

The current site in Wyken is the main administrative centre for charity the Life Path Trust, which works with vulnerable people across the city.

In planning statements to the council on behalf of the charity, it said: “The current premises are housed in low grade accommodation and parts of the former commercial activities are poor and inadequate.

“The charity needs to relocate to more modern and appropriate ‘fit for purpose’ accommodation.

“The site history stretching a long way back has been as a builder’s yard, workshop and offices and of recent times as the charity’s offices and packaging enterprise.

“Given the residential setting of the neighbourhood, coupled with the adjoining public open space and the Shakespeare Street Allotments Association, residential use of the site is more appropriate. It is a sustainable location and would contribute to the high level of need for new housing.”

The charity said it will remain at its current office in the intermediate future.

Diane Perry, chief executive of Life Path Trust, said: “Life Path Trust will continue to be based at 511 Walsgrave Road in the intermediate future.

“Our location details remain the same and there are no further details at present.”

Granting approval, planning officer Liam D’Onofrio added: “The scheme will be compatible with adjoining residential uses and benefits from being located next to public open space.

“The development will provide safe and appropriate access for residents and a high-quality residential environment.”

Outline permission for 32 retirement apartments was previously granted in 2017 but has now lapsed, with the layout in the new scheme the same.
