An aviation inspector left a family man permanently disabled after flooring him with a single punch.

The savage blow by Steven King, aged 57 from Cedar Road, Camp Hill caused victim 49-year-old Jason Gunn to fall backwards and hit his head on the pavement.

According to a CornwallLive court report as a result of the punch, Mr Gunn is unlikely to regain independence for the rest of his life and now lives in residential care.Sentencing King, Judge Simon Carr opened by saying no matter how catastrophic the injuries, he was bound by the sentencing guidelines.

He said: “You’d been with your wife in Cornwall on holiday and met up with a school friend of hers. Her partner was Mr Gunn.

“You’d all been enjoying your day but at 9.30pm Mrs King was so drunk she was no longer served alcohol and was asked to leave.

“You’d also been drinking and were confronted with Mrs King being boisterous and aggressive which I’m sure made you embarrassed and angry in equal terms.

“The disagreement continued and she ended up on the floor. At that point Mr Gunn did what any responsible person would do and stepped in to ensure a woman on the floor was safe.

“But rather than snapping out of your anger realising things had gone too far you issued physical threats to Mr Gunn.

“The two of you squared up and you punched towards him a number of times. You hit him with an extremely forceful punch that may have rendered him unconscious right away.

“He fell back unable to protect or shield himself from the fall, hitting the pavement with full force.

“He suffered a catastrophic head injury and the consequences will be with him for life. He requires 24 hour care in a residential placement.

“You offered no medical help and didn’t call 999 despite it being clear how badly he was hurt. You walked off and sat in a bus stop waiting for a taxi.

“The effect on his family has been devastating.”

King was jailed for two years.
