Funfair rides set up in Coventry have been described as 'safe' by the city council, after it was questioned over why they were set up when pubs are not allowed to reopen.

A small number of rides have been set up in Coventry's Broadgate, despite the fact the city is currently under Tier 3 coronavirus restrictions.

A CoventryLive reader asked why the rides were allowed when pubs have to remain shut under the restrictions.

However, Coventry City Council, which gave permission for the rides to be set up said that the tier three restrictions allow some outdoor leisure, as long as social distancing is practised and there is regular cleaning.

A council spokesperson added that rides and pubs cannot be compared" as under government guidelines some outdoor leisure is allowed but pubs are not.

The authority has also promised to conduct weekly reviews on whether the rides should stay, based on national and local restrictions.

At the moment, they are scheduled to remain in place in the city centre until January 3.

The council has said they are hoping the rides will enhance the Christmas shopping experience, and be a special treat for children this festive season.
