A number of workers at a food factory in Coventry have tested positive for coronavirus.

Mission Foods, based in Canley, has confirmed that eight employees have tested positive for Covid-19 and they, along with others they have had close contact with, are isolating at home.

Management at Mission Foods are working closely with Public Health at Coventry City Council, Public Health England (PHE) Midlands and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to manage the outbreak, which they say is restricted to a small area of the site.

Additional preventative measures, particularly around staff movements, have been put in place and the areas where the workers were located have been additionally sanitised and disinfected.

Elizabeth Dixon, head of manufacturing at Mission Foods in Coventry, said, “Mission Foods operates under stringent sanitisation and food safety protocols. Additionally, since early March we have acted decisively to protect the health and safety of our employees, in accordance with the directives of the UK Government and our own protocols.

"Steps range from mandatory masks, social distancing, hand sanitisation, protective screens and ensuring world class food manufacturing hygiene and disinfection protocols. Also, every employee is checked against an eight-point Covid-19 symptoms checklist including temperature prior to entry to the plant.

“We continue to work closely with Public Health at Coventry City Council, Public Health England (Midlands) and the Health and Safety Executive to ensure that our protocols are as stringent as possible.

“We are committed to supporting our employees, our consumers and our communities during this uniquely challenging time.”

Haven't we heard that somewhere before?

Covid-19 outbreak at Coventry distribution centre

“We have advised that all 186-staff at the centre are tested as a precaution and the measures that have been implemented mean we are happy for the business to continue to open as normal at this time.
