Black taxi strike 'should continue' in Coventry

Coventry's Taxi Association said it is determined drivers continue their strike action over the weekend, ahead of talks with the council.



Dozens of black cab drivers have been protesting over a lack of spaces at ranks in the city and drivers have been asked not to work this weekend.

Unions, the council and West Midlands Police were in negotiations to try and resolve the issue.

Ch Insp Kerry Blakeman said people needed taxis to get around the city.

'Speak to us'

He said: "We recognise their concerns, we're prepared to work with them and the local authority to try to resolve the situation.

"My message to them very shortly would be, Coventry needs its taxi drivers.

"People need to get around the city and they're vital to the economy."

A spokesman for the Taxi Association said the talks were necessary to resolve the dispute.

He said: "We have to carry on until Monday and we can speak with the council.

"They have to come forward and speak to us... it's very important actually."

Just my opinion, but far too many taxis fighting for too few standings. If the taxi drivers were a bit more sensible and considerate to other road users they wouldn't be hassled by the authorities about their parking. Take a look around Rover Road (by Iceland) or High Street (by the service bays to Cathedral Lanes) and you'll see what I mean.

However, I don't think using the public as a weapon (It's only the public inconvenienced) is the best way of resolving things. As far as I'm aware, private hire services are operating normally, and regular taxi users may well switch their alliance to them.
