Coventry Airport will close next year it has been confirmed. UK Civil Aviation Authority has received notification from the owners of the site that it will cease to operate from June.

The reason for the closure has not been confirmed at this point, we've approached the airport and the company understood to own the site to try and find out more information.

CoventryLive was told recently that businesses based at the airport were advised of the closure and that they'd need to vacate by May 2026.

We approached the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to try and find out more.

"Coventry Aerodrome has given formal notice to us of its plan to close the airport permanently with effect from 11 June 2026," a CAA spokesman told us.

The site first opened in 1936 as Baginton Aerodrome. It was used as a fighter airfield during the Second World War, being known as RAF Baginton. Throughout its history it has been used for for a variety of different types of flight, from freight, to smaller aircraft and even at times commercial holidays.

It's had an interesting history - it enjoyed a Papal visit in 1982 when Pope John II came as part of a tour of the UK. 350,000 people are said to have descended on the airport to catch a glimpse of his holiness.
