The application states the proposed facility says that some children have been at home for the past two years as there is no school to take them on
A new special education needs school could be opened in Coventry for kids who have nowhere to go. The council has received an application to give the go-ahead for 65b George Eliot Road to be used as special educational needs school.
The proposal states that it is understood that the premises was previously a nursery / care home/ council training centre. But, if approved, it would become a school that would cater for 35 pupils.
"The applicants currently work with the Coventry City Council with children with Special Educational Needs, by collecting the from home, taking them to their centre for activities etc," the application states. "However, the applicants are going to formalise this, by also now providing the education side by registering with Ofsted as a Special Needs Provision for up to 35 children at the application site
"The applicants are aware of the acute need for such specialist school provision, with children having been at home for the past 2 years, due to no school being able to take them on."
It explains that included in its current arrangement with the Local Authority, the applicant provides transportation for all the children which includes collection, community visits and home drop off. "This has allowed them to maintain an almost 90 per cent attendance record for the children," it adds.
"There are no such suitable facilities for the specialist nature of the school within the designated centres. The applicants have been searching for a site suitable to provide the specialist school, and have been very fortunate to find the application site, located in a highly sustainable location, near to existing schools, with its own vehicle access, parking facilities and outdoor amenity area, with a building of a size and flexible layout to provide for the educational needs of the children."
It states that the proposed school would cater for a maximum of 35 children but not all will be full time, with some attending one or two days or full time. The school day will start at 8.50am and end at 4pm.
The proposal is currently being considered by planning officers at the city council. To look at the proposals, visit the council's website.
