Police update after man with knife spotted in Coventry city centre

Police were called to Lower Precinct on August 29



Police have issued an update on a knifeman arrested in Coventry. He was detained near Lower Precinct Shopping Centre.

Officers were called to Lower Precinct at around 11.20am on August 29. Cops were also seen near Sports Direct on Upper Precinct.

A man in his 20s was quickly detained. He was arrested and taken into custody for questioning.

Police confirmed to CoventryLive that the man arrested has not been charged. He has instead been detained under the Mental Health Act.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said on August 29: “We were called to Lower Precinct in Coventry around 11.20am this morning to reports of a man with a knife. Officers were quickly on the scene, and a man in his 20s was detained.”

In an update issued today (September 4), they said: “He was not charged and subsequently detained under the Mental Health Act.”
