Both were quickly detained in Coventry
Two women have been arrested after more than 50 items from a Coventry shop. A city retailer was targeted earlier this week.
Officers had been deployed in the city centre for Project Servator. But they were quickly dispatched to a shop where it was alleged two women were attempting to leave without paying.
Officers detained two women who had concealed 50 pairs of shoes within their clothes, Coventry Police said. Searches of their city addresses were later conducted.
Hundreds of items of clothing with tags were found. All of the items have been recovered, and the two women were arrested and subsequently charged.
A spokesman for Coventry Police said: “Ready to engage with members of the public in Coventry on a Project Servator deployment, the team were immediately called to a shop where two females were attempting to leave without paying.
“Detaining the females and subsequent searches identified the ladies attempting to conceal 50 pairs of shoes within their clothes with no means of payment. A further search of their properties identified hundreds of items of clothing, new with tags. All items have been recovered and the females arrested and charged with theft offences.”
