The first phase of huge £7m works to ease the 'heavily trafficked' Longford Road is set for the go-ahead. The 'full corridor scheme' is set to improve the main road that links Bedworth to Coventry for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.

A council report explains: "Longford Road is a highly constrained, heavily trafficked route, and the scheme as a whole is essential to mitigate the impacts of developments in Exhall and North Coventry." The works are to be carried out in phases with the first to widen Longford Road near the Bayton Road Junction as well as localised carriageway widening.

Warwickshire County Council is set to approve the first phase, which will cost around £1.7m later this week. It will see final designs approved with a view for works to start in 2026.

Cash to pay for the project is coming through 'section 106' funding, which is paid for by housing developers. It is said that future phases are to follow on after the completion of Phase 1 'in line with the available Section 106 funding.'

The full plans for the Longford Road project are

  • Create a continuous high quality cycle route from the Bayton Road IndustrialEstate access to Longford Road/B4114 roundabout to provide a critical link in the Nuneaton to Coventry cycleway.
  • Highway improvements to the Bayton Road Junction, the Blackhorse Road junction and the construction of a wider cycleway/footway to improve the cycling facilities along the corridor.
  • Address network constraints and congestion through the installation of new traffic signal equipment at the Longford Road/Bayton Road Junction and the Longford Road/Blackhorse Road Junction.
  • Toucan crossing facilities on the Longford Road/Bayton Road Junction and the Longford Road/Blackhorse Road junction.
  • Carriageway widening of Longford Rd between Bayton Road and Longford Road roundabout to improve capacity.
The final decision for the first phase of the plan is set to approved on Friday (March 14).

There was no problem until the bus 'pull-in' stops were removed. Now a bus holds up the whole road when taking on board or discharging passengers! :fuming: :fuming: :fuming:
