OAPs are being 'forced out' of Nuneaton and Bedworth old folks' complexes as stairlifts are being removed. That is the claim from a resident who said elderly people who live in the borough's independent living schemes and need access to stairlifts are having to move.

The local explained the situation at Shepperton Court and said: "The council is forcing pensioners out of sheltered accommodation as the council won't pay for stair lift maintenance. It is a huge shame these people are being let down by them.

"Once again the most vulnerable being let down by the council." CoventryLive contacted Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council about the claims.

A Town Hall spokesperson said there is a long term plan to ensure 'compliance with building regulations for stairlifts' and, due to age and costs, it is not possible to replace them all.

The council added it is working with residents, who rely on stairlifts, who may be impacted by this. It says it has already been 'effective' at Eddie Miller Court and The Poplars. In regards to Shepperton Court, the local authority said that talks are ongoing with four residents currently rely on the stairlift to remain independent.
