Nuneaton and Bedworth council bosses have explained why one its vans was left marooned in flood water. The incident in Cleaver Gardens was caught on camera yesterday (January 6).

Resident Keith Kondakor clocked the marooned van while out checking out the impact of the flooding in the area. Ironically, just hours after the incident, Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council posted a message on its social media platforms urging locals to beware while out driving in flood water.

But a Town Hall spokesperson has today (January 7) explained to CoventryLive that the van got stuck in flood water as it tried to repair a flood barrier. It had to be rescued and is still awaiting recovery.

A spokesman for Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council said: "The van is awaiting recovery, unfortunately, it was caught whilst repairing one of the flood barriers."

Once again those who live in the flats in Cleaver Gardens were left surrounded by water as the nearby stretch of River Anker broke its banks in the heavy rainfall. The Environment Agency had put a flood warning in place across the area, warning of 'imminent flooding'.

Gallons of water poured from the river onto the sports fields and the area around the flats. Fortunately, unlike in previous years, no residents were left with any flood damage.

"No properties have seen flooding in their homes and the Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council’s Housing teams have contacted all vulnerable tenants to ensure they are safe and have everything they need," the spokesperson added.

"We are in regular meetings with the Tactical Co-Ordinating Group and are monitoring the situation very carefully."

The flood water engulfed the entire area, including the nearby rugby pitches and left paths unpassable. 999 calls were made to Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service last night to try and pump out some of the water away from the sports pitch and squash club off Weddington Road.
