Drivers suffered long delays after a stretch of motorway was closed in Warwickshire following a collision involving two cars.
The incident happened between junction 15 and 16 on the M40 northbound at about 1030 GMT on Wednesday.
The M40 fully reopened by 1330 GMT following delays northbound estimated at between 30 and 45 minutes.
A man and a woman, both believed to be in their 30s, travelling in separate cars were taken to hospital.
The woman, who was driving a car which overturned, suffered a chest injury and a suspected fractured pelvis.
She was flown to University Hospital in Coventry.
The man had suspected neck and back injuries and was taken to the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch.
Southbound lanes, which had been closed while the air ambulance landed, fully reopened by 1200 GMT and northbound lanes started to reopen at 1300 GMT.
