Teenage gunman who fled the country jailed for 30 years after shooting man in the face in Coventry park

Image

A teenage gunman who fled the country after he shot someone in the face at a Coventry park has been jailed for more than 30 years. Raydell Lennox, 19, fired a weapon in Caludon Castle Park after pulling up in a car at just after 10.15pm on 21 October last year.

The victim, aged in his 20s, was left with serious, life-changing facial injuries. It is thought the drive-by shooting could have been a case of mistaken identity.

Lennox had fled the country following the shooting but he'd already been identified by police as a prime suspect. The car it is understood he was travelling in the night of the shooting was found burnt out just over a week later.

He was arrested after his return to the UK and Lennox, from Sandwell, was convicted of attempted murder and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life following a two week trial. He was sentenced to 32 years imprisonment at Coventry Crown Court on Monday (19 May).

Detective Constable Rob Tilley, from the Major Crime Team, said: "This was a shooting at close range which has left a young man with significant injuries. We carried out extensive enquiries and we were able to link Lennox as being involved.

"It's unclear why Lennox fired the gun towards the victim, a strong line of enquiry has been it was mistaken identity. Guns can destroy lives. Lennox will now spend many of his young days in custody.

"We're committed to tackling gun crime as part of our ongoing Op Target: Operation Target | West Midlands Police."
