Protest held against Coventry incinerator

Protesters gathered in Broadgate in Coventry



Dozens of protesters have gathered in Coventry to demand the city council shuts down its waste incinerator.

Campaigners claimed it generated too much carbon dioxide, and said Coventry City Council sent too much rubbish to be burned rather than recycling it.

Coventry City Council said the plant complied with all government regulations.

But, it added, it is working with residents in a bid to increase recycling levels.

"We are proud to take our waste and recycling responsibilities seriously, and we do not chase results which can often see waste problems shifted elsewhere," the authority said.
