Why there was no poppy drop during Bedworth Armistice Day Parade and Service 2023

Lots of people were left looking to the skies and feeling disappointed

Bedworth's famed poppy drop during its proud Armistice Day service had to be cancelled. Thousands lined the streets of the town centre earlier this morning (November 11) to join in the event, which puts the town on the map every year.

A Tiger Moth aircraft was supposed to perform the annual poppy drop, scattering thousands of red poppies on the town centre. But it was cancelled at the eleventh hour.

This was down to the committee being unable to get permission from air traffic control for the fly-over. Ken Whitehead, chair of the Bedworth Armistice Day committee, told CoventryLive that this was as a result of the policing operation taking place in London around the Armistice event in the capital.

But news about the last minute cancellation had not reached the crowds, and many were left disappointed as they looked to the skies for the fly-over and it did not happen. However, there was a spectacle in the air.

A patriotic powered powerglider was spotted prior to the service, as the parade marched proudly through the town centre. The mystery powerglider had a union flag flying as they swooped above King Street.

Everyone from veterans to serving soldiers and cadets walked through the town to the sound of applause. Keep an eye on CoventryLive for more photographs from the event as well as our live blog where you can check out all of the action from this morning.
