Primark will be introducing self-checkouts in a huge shake-up for the store on Broadgate

Primark Coventry will be introducing self-checkouts to cut down the time customers have to queue for. Shoppers will see the new system in place in the coming weeks, the clothing retailer confirmed.

A TikTok user, called Samirah, posted a video saying her Primark was 'bougee', meaning fancy, for having the self-checkout option. In the short clip, people can be seen scanning their own items and putting them into paper bags, much like you would at a supermarket self-checkout, MirrorOnline reports.

Customers then leave through security doors, monitored by a Primark employee. In another clip she posted, a sign can be seen which read: 'Please use your receipt to EXIT.'

She was then seen scanning the barcode on her receipt before the security doors opened to let her out. Not everyone was convinced by the new system, however, with some stating people may take advantage of the system.

One said: “People nick anyway let alone with this they are going to get robbed even more.” Another wrote: “So after years of trying to put an end to paper receipts, they then make them your only option to leave?”

Others, however, acknowledged that it would speed up the check-out process. “Would make life easier,” one said. “I'm glad they're doing this,” another added.

A spokesman for Primark said: “Earlier this year we launched a trial of self-service checkouts in our Sheffield and Northampton stores. The response so far has been really positive, especially from customers who are short on time or making smaller purchases.

“We’re rolling the trial out to our West Bromwich, Kingston and Coventry stores in the coming weeks to help us understand further the benefits that self-service checkouts bring.”

Shoppers have spotted a huge new addition to the Broadgate shop

Primark Coventry has welcomed huge new additions in store. Shoppers have spotted self-checkouts on the second floor of the huge shop on Broadgate.

One shopper told CoventryLive: "They've taken up a huge part of the second floor. I don’t think it’s being allowed to be used by customers yet but it’s all set up."

It was only a matter of weeks ago when the news about the new self-checkouts was revealed. When operational, customers will be able to scan their items and put them into paper bags, much like at a supermarket self-checkout.

Shoppers will then leave through security doors, monitored by a Primark employee. The aim of the self-service checkouts is to reduce queuing in-store, which has been a gripe of shoppers up and down the country.

A spokesman for Primark previously said: "Earlier this year we launched a trial of self-service checkouts in our Sheffield and Northampton stores. The response so far has been really positive, especially from customers who are short on time or making smaller purchases.

"We’re rolling the trial out to our West Bromwich, Kingston and Coventry stores in the coming weeks to help us understand further the benefits that self-service checkouts bring."
