Poll Puts Labour Ahead Of Conservatives

Labour is more popular than the Tories for the first time since 2007, according to a new poll.



On the eve of Ed Miliband's first conference speech as leader, YouGov puts the party on 40% with the Tories on 39% and the Lib Dems trailing on 12%.

Sky's elections expert Michael Thrasher said the result was positive for Labour, but disastrous for the Liberal Democrats.

"These figures must be intensely depressing for Liberal Democrats because they suggest a reversion to the old two-party political establishment," he said.

"The battle lines appear to be drawing to the exclusion of the third party."

It comes as Mr Miliband attempts to draw a line under Labour's failure at the last election and call for the party to unite under his leadership.

The Lib-Dems may have only a very small share of the popular vote but the new Labour leader would stil need their help to form a coalition government

If Milliband has the bottle to come out and denounce the last Labour governments, he might gain an awful lot of supporters.

The problem at the moment is that no matter which party is in power, they are fighting to reduce the debts run up by Blair and Brown. Any government making cuts is going to be unpopular. There is also the matter of an illegal war that needs resolving!
