Coventry ring road gets a new sign - to make city 'more welcoming'

Councillor Jim O’Boyle said the sign will help make the city centre 'brighter' and 'more welcoming'



A new sign has been emblazoned on the Coventry ring road.

Installed on Monday (7 February), the sign says 'Welcome to Coventry' on a blue background to signify the links to the colour which was used in the medieval weaving trade as well as it being the colour of the shirts for Coventry City FC.

It has been installed on a section of the Ring Road, which faces Butts Road, close to Skydome Coventry.

Coventry City Council revealed that the sign cost £4,700, and was funded by a grant from the European Regional Development Fund, rather than with residents' council tax.

Councillor Jim O’Boyle, cabinet member for jobs, regeneration and climate change, said: “The space on the Ring Road was a perfect opportunity to create a brighter and warmer welcome for anyone travelling into the city centre, whether it be a motorist, cyclist or pedestrian.

"We hope to follow this up in future at another junction too.

Mr O'Boyle added: “We’ve done a lot of work in the city centre over the past two years to make it a brighter, greener and more welcoming city centre, and we hope this sign complements that work.”

New 'Discover Coventry' sign installed on ring road



Another sign has been put up on Coventry 's ring road for people to see when entering the city centre. It comes a few weeks after the junction by the skydome was given 'Welcome to Coventry' - to a decidely mixed reaction.

The new sign, which sits above Junction 4 near Purple Planet, reads 'Discover Coventry'. The sky blue and white banner cost £4,813.

It cost slightly more than the other one, which was £4,700, as it had to be designed to fit the curve of the Ring Road, say the council. However, both were funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

There was some criticism for the earlier sign. Helen Pendleton summed up some of the ambivalence about it by saying: "Cleaner streets would be more welcoming, not a sign."

No matter where the money comes from, (It's out of our pockets one way or another!) this is simply a waste.
