He was caught after smashing his way into a house on the outskirts of Coventry
A burglar who kicked a police officer in the chest twice after being caught red-handed has been jailed.
Last month, Leon Tyler was spotting coming and going from a yard on Frederick Road in Gun Hill, Arley for around 45 minutes.
The 27-year-old of no fixed abode, was then seen to approach a ground floor window and break a piece of wood, before trying to open the window with his hand and the piece of wood.
The window was then smashed using a hammer and Tyler got inside the property.
When police attended and tried to arrest him, he kicked an officer in the chest twice, causing him to fall backwards.
As a result, he was charged with burglary with intent to steal and assaulting an emergency services worker following the incident on May 26.
Tyler later appeared at court where he pleaded guilty to the offences.
At Coventry Magistrates’ Court on Thursday (June 24) he was sentenced to two and a half years’ imprisonment, and was made to pay a victim surcharge.
