Large gathering took place at Lentons Lane cemetery despite social distancing guidelines to prevent spread of Covid-19
A passer-by said the congregation had gathered at Lenton Lane cemetery in Coventry yesterday. (Thursday, May 28).
As the ceremony took place, cones were put in place within the site to block the road, and cars lined the entrance to the cemetery in Aldermans Green.
The ceremony is understood to have taken place in the far side of the graveyard and to have involved a large number of mourners.
One passer-by said: "There were over 200 people and no social distancing.
"Not a police officer or anyone in authority in site. Other members of the public were informed they couldn't go to the cemetery and the gates were locked with security on them."
The photographs show a large amount of traffic outside the cemetery, which is run by Coventry City Council. The graveyard was open this afternoon with no sign of disruption, but it's understood from separate sources that a large funeral did take place in the morning.
It's not thought the latest gathering was reported to West Midlands Police, as the force could find no record of having attended the cemetery at the time.
CoventryLive has also contacted Coventry City Council for comment.
