Coventry’s libraries are set to close in a bid to tackle coronavirus in the city.

At the end of the day today (March 23), all of the libraries across the city will be closed indefinitely.

It comes as part of increased calls from the Government for members of the public to maintain social distancing in a bid to prevent the spread of the virus.

Coventry’s libraries join pubs, restaurants and a large number of shops in closing at this time.

Fines picked up by patrons during the closure will be waived, it has been confirmed.

However, online services, such as the borrowing of ebooks, and audiobooks, will remain available.

The council’s Schools Library team will be continuing to work with schools to support them maintain education provision for the children of key workers.

The decision to close was made by the leader of the council, Coventry City Council’s chief executive and the relevant cabinet member.

Cllr Kevin Maton, cabinet member for education and skills, said: “While I am very sad this decision has had to be made, it is clearly the right thing to do.

“Our libraries are very popular as meeting places which in normal times is one of their great strengths. However, it has become increasingly clear how vital it is for everyone to follow the advice around social distancing as it gives us the best chance to limit the spread of Coronavirus.

“We know how important our libraries are for those without access to the internet, especially those at school and college and residents who need to keep in touch with relatives and health and care centres. We will be looking at ways in which we can provide further help.

“We will of course advise people when the restrictions are lifted either fully and partially and we can’t wait to see our libraries busy again”.

How are people laid off by the virus, who don't have an internet connection at home, supposed to apply for Universal Credit if they can't use the computers in the library?

Also I'm not convinced this is the real reason for closing the libraries.
