Rugby Borough Council have launched an investigation after a mountain of asbestos filled waste was dumped on the edge of a Warwickshire village.

Residents of Barnacle were alarmed to find the rubbish on their doorstep on yesterday morning.

Police were on the scene by around 12:45am on February 25.

The dumped waste meant the road was closed overnight and throughout much of Tuesday causing disruption to villagers and local children using school transport.

Council bosses have now said they are launching an investigation with a view to prosecute those responsible.

Speaking to CoventryLive through their Facebook group , residents shared their thoughts on what had happened.

Resident Lisa Chambers suggested that the recent increase to charges for vans and trailers using the tip might have contributed to the increase in flytipping.

Emily Jean Hill added: "If the council and waste disposal centres (the tip) could charge less I think less of this would possibly happen."

Terri Harman replied saying: "Totally agree and the cost to clear it is far in excess of what the annual loss if charges were reduced. False economy."

At the time of publication, Rugby Borough Council were waiting for full confirmation on whether Lower road has fully re-opened.
