Businesses have been plunged into the dark this evening
A major power cut has left parts of Coventry city centre in darkness this evening (December 12).
Many businesses and homes around Bull Yard and Shelton Square were plunged into darkness, with many including Tesco, The Yard pub and The Wave water park forced to close early.
Pictures were sent to CoventryLive of children inside the new £36.7 million water park wrapped in silver foil to keep warm.
But the Christmas lights still remained on on the nearby tree outside The Yard.
At 7.30pm, 73 properties were still affected, according to Western Power Distribution.
The company said power was expected to be restored in the area by 8pm.
Security alarms could also be heard ringing through the town centre.
A Coventry worker, who did not want to be named, said: "I was popping to Tesco on my way to the train station and suddenly it was like you'd walked into a dark room.
"The street lights weren't working and the shops were mostly black.
"It was quite scary trying to navigate steps and loose paving slabs."
