There were fears that people would be left 'stranded'

Some at-risk bus services across Nuneaton, Bedworth and North Warwickshire have been saved.

Following Stagecoach’s announcement that a raft of services are to either be cut or altered in the New Year, Warwickshire County Council has stepped in to ensure that there is still coverage on all of the services.

Some have been saved altogether while others will have revised services for when the new timetable kicks-in on January 5.

Cash to subsidise some of the services has come from new developments in the area, via what is known as Section 106 funding.

Nuneaton-based councillor Jeff Clarke, cabinet member for highways, said: “I am really pleased we have been able to secure the funding for and redesign these important services to make sure our communities are not left without the public transport links that many depend on.

“Thanks to the hard work of the officers involved in overseeing the tendering process, our residents will be able to start using our new bus service as soon as Stagecoach withdraws in early January.”

Opposition Labour members at Shire Hall last month called for the county council to step in and fill in the gaps left by Stagecoach’s proposals as they feared people would be left 'stranded'.

Cllr Richard Chattaway was pleased their plea had been listened to, adding: “The Labour group led the debate on at full council and many of my group have been in meeting with officers along with Warwickshire’s Labour MP , to get to where we are today.”
